Level 5!

‘BCU Level 5 Coaches are recognised as a cadre of competent, experienced, motivated paddlesport coaches with a depth and wealth of knowledge, who can be relied upon to provide practical coaching, advice and guidance up to the highest level.’ (The BCU definition of  Level 5 Coaches)

My assessment weekend was last weekend (24 & 25 February 2012) and despite being concerned that a month skiing in Kashmir prior may not have been the best way to prepare, I am pleased to announce that I passed on my first attempt at assessment.

As it has always been my ambition to work to such a high standard I undertook my level 5 training once I graduated from University, and I have been working at achieving the award ever since. This is my first top tier award, and I am immensely proud to have achieved it, and to have been benchmarked by highly respected coaches, representing our National Governing Body.

Portuguese filming

I’m writing this in my brief 5 day turn around period between a trip to Portugal and heading out to Kashmir skiing, so it feels a little hectic right now.

Our brief was simple – to go and film an advert for Pyranhas’ new creekboat, the Shiva. We had decided on Portugal as the location as we had seen reports of stunning granite falls with a high probability of sunshine, and we weren’t disappointed with what we found. As a winter paddling destination it was really good, with enough of a remote feel to be adventurous, but with expresso readily available to feel civilised. it was also a real treat to be in the sunshine again after the grey winter we’ve been having.

Success in Kenya

I’m slowly acclimatising to life back in the UK, after the warmth and brilliant water levels in Kenya. We had an extremely successful expedition, completing 6 first descents, and I ran a 45 foot waterfall that had never been run. As my first major expedition it was an outstanding experience, with a really strong team, and some memories which will last a lifetime. We are currently editing all the Media gathered on the trip, and are looking forward to a tour in the new year, showcasing both out expedition and the potential in Kenya for further exploration and brilliant whitewater for others to go and explore.

The return also marks a change for me, in that I am now a full time freelance instructor, having come to the end of my contract with Plas Y Brenin. I am really excited about this opportunity, giving me the ability to enjoy a wide variety of work, while having time to have more adventures, both at home and abroad.

Kenya – November 2011

Well, It’s been an eventful week or so, but a very exciting one. Last week I was invited to join an expedition at the last minute to Kenya, seeking out some first descents and paddling some of Africa’s best whitewater (I hope!)

Pete, Adam and Jon who I am joining, have already been on several successful expeditions between them, most recently as a threesome to Peru, on what was a very successful trip. I was very honoured to be offered the opportunity of a lifetime to go, and I would like to extend my thanks to Plas Y Brenin who have been extremely supportive, holding my MIA assessment until next year at very short notice, and Pyranha Kayaks, who have given me a brand new Shiva to explore the rivers of Kenya with
